Part of the imperial cities of Morocco, it has been the capital of the country at several times and is considered today as its spiritual capital. Its foundation dates back to the end of the 8<abbr class=\"abbr\" title=\"8th century\"><sup>th<\/sup>century, under the reign of Moulay Idriss I<abbr class=\"abbr\" title=\"the first\"><sup>st<\/sup><\/abbr>.<\/abbr> Its prestigious past has made it one of the major centers of Islamic civilization linked to Baghdad, Damascus, Cordoba, Cairo, Kairouan, Granada, Palermo, Isfahan or Samarkand, with which it had established both economic social, and cultural exchanges.<\/p>\n<p>Various titles have been awarded to the city of Fez, including the <i>Athens of Africa<\/i>, the <i>Queen of the Maghreb<\/i> and the <i>Baghdad of the Maghreb<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>It spans three sectors: the old city (medina), a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the royal enclosure and the new districts, established by the French, and which nowadays extend into the surrounding plain. Administratively, the city is made up of the municipality of Fez (divided into six districts) and the municipality of M\u00e9chouar F\u00e8s Jdid (where the royal palace is located). This building is characterized by its multiple doors and openings arranged symmetrically. It offers rich and varied decorative registers inspired by the art and decoration of Moroccan Andalusia.
